100% of the seafood we sell comes from sustainable sources
Hannaford will only sell products harvested using legal methods in regulated environments and encourage our suppliers and the fishing community to invest in gear and farming technologies that reduce adverse seafood production impact on the environment. We donated over 25 million pounds of food to hunger relief in 2019
When we have safe, edible food that we can't sell in our stores, our highest priority is donating that food to people in need. These donation efforts provided 20 million meals for people in our communities and helped reduce food waste by over 44%. We recycled 81.2% of our waste in 2019
We recycled 96 million pounds of cardboard and 3.8 million pounds of plastic. We diverted 8 million pounds of food waste to compost farms and diverted 13 million pounds of food waste to a biodigester, creating clean energy at Exeter Agri-Energy (EAE).

100% of our stores are certified as stewards for sustainability
Our stores are audited annually for environmentally preferred practices. We review water use, energy use and storm water run-off practices to ensure we operate with minimal impact to the environment. All of our stores meet or exceed the standards set by Manomet and we work to continually improve our score year after year.
We saved 7 million kilowatt hours of energy by switching to LED lighting
We use high-efficiency overhead lighting in our stores that can help us save up to 500,000 kWh annually. That's enough to power 46 homes for a year.
100% of our store brand coffee is Fair Trade Certified
Last year, the Global Fair Trade movement empowered 1.6 million farmers and workers across Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean to reach better terms with their trading partners. Fair Trade Certified products are produced according to rigorous standards that protect farmers, workers, fishermen and the environment.
Genetically Modified Food Policy
At Hannaford, we're passionate about providing our customers with nutritious and affordable products. We want customers to have confidence in the products we sell and access to foods that fit their dietary needs and lifestyles. Hannaford understands that navigating genetically modified foods (GMOs) can be a complex issue for customers. Our goal is to ensure customers have consistent and easy to read information about GMOs right on products.
As a result, Hannaford is choosing the most transparent labeling option to make it easier for customers to understand what's included in the products they love by requiring all private brand products to have clear on-pack Bioengineered Food disclosure. We are working to complete this well ahead of the Federal Bioengineered labeling deadline of January 1, 2022. Read the full policy here.
Farm Animal Welfare Policy
Hannaford is a passionate supporter of the well-being and welfare of farm animals. We are continuously refining our approach and seeking to improve sustainability and transparency within our supply chain. Hannaford looks to partner with suppliers who are committed to sound, science-based animal care practices and the elimination of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect. We believe that an animal's welfare at all phases of its life should be considered in terms of the globally recognized "five freedoms" of animal welfare.
